YaLa Africa launches the Kids Kitchen program in Freetown

December 2, 2015

The launch of the Kids Kitchen project in Freetown has been a huge success thus far...thanks to you! With the help of funds raised through Global Giving, all 150 students of the We Are the Future nursery and primary school now receive school lunches daily. Lunches consisting of rice, fresh vegetables, meat, etc. are helping to keep the kids happy and focused throughout the school day. To learn more about the project or make a donation, click here

Tel Aviv-Ramallah-Kigali: A Peacebuilding Journey

Sarah and Hamze took a trip to Kigali, Rwanda to learn about the unique reconciliation process young people created after the Rwandan Genocide. 20 years later, the positive effects are clear. Peace education and unity clubs promote coexistence and cooperation for the next generation. Interactions between children of killers and children of victims of the Genocide find ways to live in peace despite their complicated past. Learn more about the reconciliation process here.

Freetown welcomes an Ebola-free future

November 10, 2015

On November 7th the WHO officially announced Sierra Leone free from Ebola and we could not be happier. Throughout the nearly year and a half long outbreak, our YaLa network in Freetown worked in partnership with local and international groups to provide training to dedicated youth in the field of agriculture, health/hygiene education, marketing, business skills, all of which suffered during the outbreak. 
 

Freetown Global Giving Challenge!

Our latest fundraiser will fund a small kitchen to provide daily meals to the children of the We Are the Future kindergarten and primary school in Freetown, Sierra Leone. These children come from poor fishing communities where families have lost most of their income due to the Ebola outbreak that has devastated the country and its economy. We now have 19 lush school and community gardens have been planted in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods of Kigali. They are producing nutritious fruits and vegetables - from papaya and watermelons to carrots, tomatoes, green beans and more!
